Post-op Eating
Following surgery you will progress through stages of eating, just like a baby would, only much faster. The stages are:
- Clear Liquids – Water, broth, vegetable juice, fruit juice (maximum 8 oz. per day), water and herbal tea. This diet should not last more than a few days, because it contains virtually no protein. Lack of adequate protein is unhealthy and leads to wasting of your muscle tissue.
- Full Liquids – Protein Shakes, low-fat milk or regular soy milk, low-fat cream soups, low-sugar (10 grams or less) yogurt, low-sugar puddings. Depending upon your surgeon’s recommendation, this stage can last from 2-8 weeks. You can continue to consume the juices and other foods from the Clear Liquid Stage.
- Pureed Foods – Baby food consistancy….no chunks….smooth! Get your blender or food processor out and have a good time! Bean soups, fat-free refried beans, lentil soup, chili, mashed potatoes with cheese and chicken….let your imagination run wild! You can have applesauce or other pureed fruit and
- Soft Foods -Foods that are easy to chew and soft in texture.
- Regular Textured Foods
